Emberhollow Saga

★★★★☆ 4.4 Editor rating

Emberhollow Saga is a proper handheld RPG with turn-based fights, a sprawling party, and a story that actually earns its slow stretches. You guide a band of wanderers across a dying kingdom, and the writing has a dry sense of humor that kept me reading the optional dialogue instead of skipping it.

Combat uses a stance system: switch between offensive and defensive postures mid-battle to counter enemy patterns. It reads well on a phone screen because the icons are chunky and the turn order is always visible. On older devices the longer battles got a touch warm, but never uncomfortable.

The downside is grind in the middle chapters, where the pacing sags and you're farming for upgrades. Push through it and the back half opens up nicely. Autosave is reliable, which matters when you only get ten minutes at a time.
