Which genres actually suit a phone
Some genres were made for phones and some were dragged there kicking and screaming. Figuring out which is which saves a lot of disappointment at the download screen.
Casual, puzzle, and card games are the natural fit. They work in short bursts, forgive interruptions, and rarely need more than a thumb. Strategy games can shine too, as long as the interface is built for touch rather than ported from a mouse.
RPGs are a mixed bag. Turn-based ones adapt beautifully because you set the pace. Real-time ones with fiddly menus can feel cramped. Racing and action games look spectacular but tax both your battery and your hands over long sessions.
The genres that struggle most are the ones that assume precise, fast input across the whole screen. They can be done well, but it takes extra care. When a studio nails it, you really feel the effort.
My rule of thumb: match the genre to how you actually play. If your sessions are short and scattered, lean casual. If you've got an hour at home, that's when the deeper genres earn their keep.
